My darling Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds made a fabulous discovery the other day. She was watching an old episode of ‘Jambers’, a Belgian reporter who made television documentaries on eccentric people and groups. It was always great fun.
The episode Lucy was watching was about an alcoholic called René Jacques. And her discovery was that this guy is almost an exact copy of the legendary character David Brent in the British sitcom ‘The Office’ (2001-2003). Or rather, Brent looks like a copy of Jacques. Ahh David Brent, who doesn’t remember this genius creation by comedian Ricky Gervais? Anyway, if you do remember office manager Brent, you should check out this clip on YouTube. It’s eight minutes and you will be stunned.
Unbelievable right? Everything, his facial expressions, his body language, his constant talking, it is all spot on. Even the style of filming is very similar to ‘The Office’. It was filmed ten years before the legendary BBC-series, so Gervais could have seen it somehow. Either that, or it is just a bizarre coincidence. This happens sometimes; there is an old interview with Tom Waits in which he sounds exactly like Heath Ledger’s Joker in ‘The Dark Knight’.
Speaking of Brent, this maniac will return this year in ‘David Brent: Life on the Road’. It’s a fake documentary, like ‘The Office’ was, in which Brent – who now fancies himself a rockstar on the road – is followed by a camera crew. Can’t wait. Check out the trailer below here.
