It’s Official: The Acolyte is Disney’s First Real Star Wars Failure

In recent years, Disney has released one Star Wars series after the other. Most were pretty good with especially The Mandalorian and Andor getting rave reviews. The latest is The Acolyte, of which the first two episodes were released on June 5 on Disney Plus.

If you ask the critics, the series is a successful addition to the SW universe. If you ask the fans you get quite a different view. At IMDb, the show is currently rated with a painful 3,4 and most of the 1.5 K user reviews are extremely negative. A sample of the comments: ‘Jar Jar Binks was a museum masterpiece next to this’, ‘this is laughably bad writing & direction’ and ‘the worst Star Wars project since the Holiday Special.’ Autch.

I am aware of the fact that Star Wars fans are notoriously difficult to please. Many of the prequels and sequels were also harshly criticized when they first came out, although since the Disney takeover of Lucas Film, the prequel films by George Lucas’ have risen somewhat in popularity again .

After viewing the first five episodes of The Acolyte, I have to say I am with the fans on this one though. Judging the series on the basis of plot, characters, acting, action and atmosphere, I find it to be a pretty terrible show. Yes, the fifth episode indeed contains some excellent lightsabre action, but because the writing is so weak, the showdowns lose almost all of their potential impact.

The Acolyte is the first series to venture outside of the Skywalker era. It takes place about a hundred years before the rise of the Empire in the peaceful High Republic era. The story revolves around a female force user who is killing off Jedi’s. Her twin sister is accused of the crime, but after her innocence is proven, she joins the Jedi in order to track down her sister and we learn of their family tragedy that caused her sister to crave for revenge. We also learn that she is guided by a dark master, whose appearance is very Sith-like.

The main point thematically, seems to be that the Jedi themselves can be an oppressive force, which in this case has resulted in the rise of evil. The problem is that the characters and their motivations are not one bit convincing. It is also problematic that this feels like another rise of the Sith story for which we have no need. Lucas has done this already in the prequels, and in my opinion he did a fine job, although certainly not flawless.

The show really gets embarrassing in episode 3 when the Witches are introduced: a new group of force users. The dialogues make George Lucas seem like a William Shakespeare. Things don’t improve in the following episodes. Were there no question marks with the producers when they read the scripts? What is it that convinced them to invest 180 million dollars (!) in this show? It’s mind boggling.

I am not gonna finish it after watching episode 5. It is now revealed who the bad guy is and frankly, I thought this was a terrible choice as well. I am not curious to find out what Sol is hiding nor do I care to find out how the relationship between the twin sisters is gonna develop. I am still interested in new Star Wars series by Disney, but The Acolyte is pretty much a disaster as far as I’m concerned. I can only hope that Disney will learn from this costly mistake.

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans

Loose remake of Abel Ferrara’s 1992 cult classic. Ferrara was pretty pissed when he heard about it and said he wanted the makers to ‘die in hell’. Nicolas Cage is the deranged central character who uses his badge to do bad things.

In the aftermath of the hurricane Katrina, Terence McDonagh (Cage) saves a convict from drowning which earns him a medal and a major back injury. He starts to take huge amounts of drugs for the pain. It starts with Vicodin, but soon he turns to heroin, cocaine and crack.

After he is promoted to lieutenant, McDonagh starts investigating the murder of a Senegalese family which eventually leads him to local dope boss Big Fate. His increased drug intake in the meantime, causes him to lose grip on reality. He also has a gambling debt that is getting way out of control.

Herzog’s version is a little lighter than Ferrara’s although there are some intense scenes as well, like the one in which McDonagh withholds oxygen from an old lady in a wheelchair to get information out of her. Another difference is that Keitel’s character is terrible from the beginning, while McDonagh degenerates more gradually during the film.

Cage is in one of his more weird modes, and it is a lot of fun to watch. So are his hallucinations of lizards and the sweet interactions with his girlfriend, the prostitute Frankie (Eva Mendes). Around her, he’s a different character. Cage and Mendes have a great chemistry.

This remake was perhaps a strange choice for a renowned filmmaker such as Herzog. It is not amongst his finest works, but it does have a lot of quality. Ferrara and Herzog met years after its release at the Locarno Film Festival and made peace. Despite its sound reviews, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans was a box office flop.

Bad Lieutenant

Harvey Keitel is the Bad Lieutenant in Abel Ferrara’s disturbing cop drama. He’s the kind of guy who starts snorting cocaine in his car right after he has dropped his two boys off at school. LT, as he’s credited, is a hopeless addict. He’s addicted to alcohol, crack, smack and gambling. He is also a walking time bomb.

Harvey Keitel was on a roll this year. First he appeared in Reservoir Dogs and then in this, probably the most well known and appreciated movies by New York artist and filmmaker Abel Ferrara. His performance in Bad Lieutenant is very raw, angry and animallike. LT is like a whacked out version of Keitel’s Mean Streets character.

Speaking of that movie, there are some definite links there, and with Scorsese in general. New York plays a big role, and so does religion. In his most desperate moment, LT even hallucinates of Jesus.

So how bad is LT? Pretty bad. He steals illegal drugs from evidence and puts them in the market and he steals money from two guys who just robbed a store owner while he sends the poor guy over to the station to file a report. He uses his badge only to blackmail two underaged girls to perform sexual acts, and his gun is strictly for blowing out his car radio after he lost another basebal bet.

Like Ferrara’s other drug movie The Addiction, Bad Lieutenant is a very effective film about addiction as it shows the constant hunger and the madness of it. LT is just going around frantically feeding the beast, but it’s never going to be enough. We know he is never going to fill that void and his inevitable downfall draws ever nearer. The despair that Keitel expresses is very well acted. The level of self destruction and self hatred is at times hard to watch though.

He started making amateur films on Super 8 in his teens before making his mark as independent film director with bloody underground films such as The Driller Killer. Ferrara has an independent way of working, uses low budgets, but is still able to attract Hollywood talent for his movies, such as Christopher Walken and Harvey Keitel. His raw, realistic style and controversial content has earned him a position as an important voice in American cult cinema.

5 vragen over het Konijneneiland in Schermerhorn

Bestaat het Konijneneiland nog?
Ja en nee. Ja, het Konijneneiland bestaat nog, maar Stichting Het Konijneneiland is dit jaar opgeheven. De stichting was opgericht om konijnen een beter leven te geven, maar na honderden levens van konijnen en andere dieren verbeterd te hebben is het voor Loesje tijd om iets nieuws te gaan doen. Het eiland zelf, sinds 2010 in ons beheer, is nog altijd een klein paradijsje in de polder. We hebben er nu kippen en schapen rondlopen en heel veel bomen geplant.

Waar is het eiland gevestigd?
Langs de N243 ter hoogte van Schermerhorn. Het is het eerste eiland dat vanaf de weg te zien is als je uit de richting van Alkmaar komt en het loopt door tot aan het reclamebord van de beeldentuin van Nic Jonk in Grootschermer. Het is een écht eiland, maar het is wel via een bruggetje langs de weg toegankelijk.

Wat is nu nog het doel van het Konijneneiland nu er geen konijnen meer worden opgevangen?
Het is eigenlijk een enorme tuin geworden, waar we heel veel tijd en liefde in hebben gestopt. Het houdt me in beweging. Als redacteur zit ik eigenlijk de hele dag en ik ben ook niet zo’n sportman. Het onderhoud van het eiland dwingt me om het schrijven af te wisselen met wandelen en werken in de buitenlucht. Voor HSP’er Loesje is het een fijne prikkelarme omgeving om dagelijks even tot zichzelf te komen en in verbinding te staan met de natuur.

Wat zijn de belangrijkste voor- en nadelen van zo’n eiland?
Het voornaamste nadeel is dat zo’n eiland onderhouden heel veel werk is. Vanaf de lente is de groei van alle planten, bomen en struiken niet bij te benen. Het is een constant gevecht tegen de elementen, waarbij je continu achter de feiten aanloopt. Ook kost het aardig wat geld aan materialen en gereedschappen.

Toch zou ik er niet snel afscheid van willen nemen. De laatste jaren dringt steeds meer het besef door dat de wereld voor een periode van ernstige ontwrichting staat. Het klimaatprobleem en de biodiversiteitscrisis gaan gezamenlijk zeer ernstige en negatieve gevolgen hebben. Desondanks denk ik dat we de transitie als mensheid wel gaan maken voordat het echt misgaat, maar we zullen wel getuige zijn van een heleboel ellende.

Dit kan het gevoel van machteloosheid oproepen omdat niks wat ik persoonlijk ga doen deze klimaat- en natuurrampen zal voorkomen. En daarmee kom ik op het eiland: daar heb ik wel invloed op. We hebben een stukje natuur gecreëerd waar dieren, vogels en insecten veilig kunnen leven en bomen kunnen groeien en bloeien. De wereld gaan we er niet mee redden, maar het is fijn om met zo’n initiatief wel op kleine schaal iets concreets te kunnen bijdragen. Ook is het een fijne plek om lekker te chillen in de zomer.

Mag ik komen kijken?
Zeker, het eiland is vrij toegankelijk. Houd svp de poortjes goed gesloten in verband met de dieren, maar kom gerust eens langs als je in de buurt bent.
