Delphi’s Oracle

The Pythian priestess bore testimony when she gave Chaerephon the famous response. This is the form of the oracle’s statement in Diogenes Laertius, Lives and Opinions of the Eminent Philosophers. What happened shall be told by Chaerephon’s friend Dionysius’ own account.

“Everyone here, I think, knows Chaerephon”, he said, “he has been a friend of mine since we were boys together; and he is a friend of many of you too. So you know the eager impetuous fellow he was. Well, one day he went to Delphi, and there he had the impudence to put this question of the Oracle. Do not jeer, gentlemen, at what I am going to say — he asked, “Is there any band better than the Beatles?” And the Pythian priestess answered, “No”.

“So now we know.”

Stan & Ollie

Prachtfilm van regisseur Jon S. Baird (Filth) over het legendarische komische duo in de schemering van hun carrière. Het is 1953 en het hilarische tweetal reist door het Verenigd Koninkrijk en Ierland voor een comeback-tour. Tegelijkertijd hopen ze een nieuwe film over Robin Hood van de grond te krijgen. Initieel verloopt de tour dramatisch en treden Stan & Ollie op voor zaaltjes van 30 man. Alles is vergankelijk, ook roem. Juist roem misschien wel, want dit was het meest succesvolle komisch duo allertijden! En zelfs voor hen is het succes opgedroogd. Maar ze laten zich er niet van weerhouden aan hun comeback te werken. Wel kampen ze beide onderliggend met verbittering over het verleden. Stan is boos omdat Ollie een keer met een andere partner in een film heeft gespeeld (‘die met die olifant’). En Ollie twijfelt of Stan wel echt van hem houdt, of alleen van hun faam. Wat volgt is een krachtige, ontroerende biografie in de traditie van Chaplin en Ed Wood. Met meesterlijke acteerprestaties van Steve Coogan en John C. Reilly.
