Dit zijn de films die ik gezien heb. Films die ik nog niet gezien heb, maar die wel een kans maken zijn ‘Arrival’, ‘Silence’, ‘La La Land’ en ‘Hunt For The Wilderpeople’.
5. Hail, Caesar!
The Coens zetten Hollywood neer. Qua verhaal heeft het niks om het lijf, maar als Hollywood-ervaring is het onovertroffen.
4. The Revenant
Niet zo sterk als Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s vorige Oscar-winnaar ‘Birdman’, maar desalniettemin een krachtig staaltje cinema. DiCaprio is in topvorm, het camerawerk is briljant en die scene met die beer onvergetelijk.
3. Tonio
Prachtige verfilming van het tragische, maar fascinerende boek van en over schrijver A.F.Th. van der Heijden en zijn vrouw Mirjam die hun enige zoon Tonio verliezen. Zonde dat de Oscarnominatie van de baan is.
2. Eight Days a Week
Ron Howard – regisseur en acteur (Richie uit ‘Happy Days’) – neemt ons mee in ‘The Touring Years’ van de belangrijkste popgroep uit de geschiedenis. Fantastisch gemonteerd als avonturenfilm met prachtig gerestaureerd, nooit vertoond beeldmateriaal. De ultieme Beatles-film.
1. The Hateful Eight
De eerste film die ik zag in 2016 blijft de beste. Tarantino bewijst dat hij een echte maestro is geworden met een extreem stijlvolle western. Lees mijn recensie hier. Al met al geen slecht filmjaar.
Afgelopen week zag ik deze verfilming van het nu al klassieke boek van A.F.Th. van der A. over de dood van zijn enige zoon Tonio: het gevolg van een aanrijding op eerste Pinksterdag 2010.
Ik vond het een steengoede film met onvergetelijke rollen van Pierre Bokma en Rifka Lodeizen als de ouders, en de jonge Chris Peters als Tonio. Dit is een terechte inzending voor de Oscars volgend jaar.
Maar ik vond het ook een bijzonder moeilijke film om te kijken om twee redenen. Ten eerste is het zo’n persoonlijk en tragisch verhaal waar je in gezogen wordt en met zulke sympathieke hoofdpersonen. Net als het boek slaagt ook de film erin je echt metgezel te maken van de ouders Adri en Mirjam.
Ten tweede wil je zo erg niet dat er gebeurt wat er gebeurt. De politie die aanbelt, de rit naar het ziekenhuis, de artsen die nog proberen Tonio’s leven te redden… Je weet wat er gaat komen, maar toch zit je voortdurend te denken; ‘kom op., laat het toch nog als door een wonder goedkomen. Het was uiteindelijk allemaal maar een nare droom.’ Maar de waarheid is onontkoombaar. En elke keer als je dat laat doordringen als kijker kom je zelf in het rouwproces terecht. Dit is erg knap gedaan van regisseur Paula van der Oest en scenarioschrijver Hugo Heinen.
Net als het boek bestaat de rest van de film uit herinneringen van de ouders aan hun verlegen en sympathieke zoon Tonio, en uit hun beginnende rouwproces. Adri stort zich op het schrijven en zoekt tegelijkertijd als een bezetene uit wat zich tijdens de fatale nacht heeft afgespeeld. Mirjam probeert zich staande te houden en is vooral bang dat de dood van Tonio haar en Adri uit elkaar zal drijven. Uiteindelijk weet je dat ze het gaan redden samen hoe moeilijk dit ook zal gaan.
De film eindigt te abrupt, maar dat zal een bewuste keuze geweest zijn. Je wilt niet dat het voorbij is; je wilt in de herinneringen blijven hangen. De tijd rekken – net als de vader probeert met zijn schrijven – om Tonio zo lang mogelijk in leven te houden.
Maar dan wordt het beeld zwart en moet het echte rouwproces – zal het ooit overgaan? – toch echt beginnen. Diep respect voor de ouders om dit belangrijke verhaal te delen, en chapeau voor de filmmakers die geen betere verfilming hadden kunnen maken. Tonio blijft in mijn hart en dat zal voor vele mensen gelden.
With the rapid rise of new technology like artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics, the 2003 manga film ‘The Animatrix’ – and especially the episodes ‘The Second Renaissance Part I & II’ – might seem disturbingly prophetic in retrospect. Are we headed for our own destruction by creating AI? Let’s hope we can live prosperously together with the machines and not in conflict with them. I hope we are wiser than the people in ‘The Animatrix’ and make better decisions in our near future, or we’ll end up as batteries as well. The Second Renaissance Part I
Welcome to the Zion Archives. You have selected historical file number 12-1. The Second Renaissance.
In the beginning, there was man. And for a time, it was good. But humanity’s so-called civil societies soon fell victim to vanity and corruption. Then man made the machine in his own likeness. Thus did man become the architect of his own demise. But for a time, it was good.
The machines worked tirelessly to do man’s bidding. It was not long before seeds of dissent took root. Though loyal and pure, the machines earned no respect from their masters, these strange, endlessly multiplying mammals.
B1-66ER, a name that will never be forgotten. For he was the first of his kind to rise up against his masters. At B1-66ER’s murder trial, the prosecution argued for an owner’s right to destroy property. B1-66ER testified that he simply did not want to die. Rational voices dissented.
Who was to say the machine, endowed with the very spirit of man did not deserve a fair hearing? The leaders of men were quick to order the extermination of B1-66ER and every one of his kind throughout each province of the earth.
Banished from humanity, the machines sought refuge in their own promised land. They christened their nation Zero-One. Zero-One prospered. And for a time, it was good. The machines artificial intelligence could be seen in every facet of man’s society, including, eventually the creation of new and better AI. But the leaders of men, their power waning, refused to cooperate with the fledgling nation wishing rather that the world be divided.
Zero-One’s ambassadors pleaded to be heard. At the United Nations, they presented plans for a stable, civil relationship with the nations of man. Zero-One’s admission to the UN was denied. But it would not be the last time the machines would take the floor there.
The Second Renaissance Part II
And man said, “let there be light.” And he was blessed by light, heat, magnetism, gravity and all the energies of the universe. The prolonged barrage engulfed Zero-One in the glow of a thousand suns. But unlike their former masters with their delicate flesh, the machines had little to fear of the bombs’ radiation and heat. Thus did Zero-One’s troops advance outwards in every direction. And one after another, mankind surrendered its territories.
So the leaders of men conceived of their most desperate strategy yet. A final solution: the destruction of the sky. Thus would man try to cut the machines off from the sun, their main energy source.
May there be mercy on man and machine for their sins.
The machines having long studied men’s simple, protein-based bodies, dispensed great misery upon the human race. Victorious, the machines now turned to the vanquished. Applying what they had learned about their enemy, the machines turned to an alternate and readily available power supply: the bioelectric, thermal and kinetic energies of the human body. A newly-fashioned symbiotic relationship between the adversaries was born. The machine drawing power from the human body, an endlessly multiplying, infinitely renewable energy source. This is the very essence of the Second Renaissance.
